Social media has changed the way we communicate with each other. Since the introduction of social media there has been a real disconnect off real-life conversations and real relationships. Here are a few negative impacts that social media can have.
1. Privacy is a big issue. Social media is encouraging people to become more public with their private lives, users are easily giving out information they could never reveal on a face-to-face conversation.
2. Lack of emotional connection. The quality of a conversation using social media is awful because you cannot sense the emotion or enthusiasm from the other person. It makes you wonder if they actually mean what they say.
3. Creates a false self-image. We post pictures of ourselves looking perfect and share good news. We don’t post pictures when the dog dies, or loose a job. We develop this perfect image of ourselves instead of staying true to who we are.
There is a significant source of concern for lack of human development for our children living in this technological world. Social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media. We must put restrictions on the use of social media.
